Assassin - Bio

When a newcomer to the world of dancehall took the stage alongside T.O.K in the Cayman Islands in summer 2001, he expected it to be a good outing. He would perform his usual songs for a new crowd, and hopefully garner a few new fans. He took the stage, performed those familiar songs, but instead of a few fans, he acquired an island of new fans. His performance was so commanding and capturing that he was selected mayor of the island for a day. That particular performance made the young DJ realize even more that the place of dancehall music was where he wanted to be. He declares that show to be his best so far, stating, "I even outshined T.O.K" with a slight laugh. That night on that island, many got a glimpse of the young DJ, Assassin, poised to take his place as a forerunner in dancehall music.
Assassin got his lethal stage name from musical clashes he encountered with friends while in school. He would literally "assassinate" the competition; as a result, the moniker was adopted. Born and raised in Papine, 20 year-old Jeffrey Campbell started deejaying at around age 4. When asked who saw the potential in him, his first response is his brother, Garrett, also known as G-Code. His family was a big factor in the former Camperdown student's decision to pursue music. "My family really, my family and friends said I could do it, so I just did." Assassin did just that, he ventured into the world of reggae music with the assistance of one of his musical influences, Spragga Benz.
Spragga Benz, being a DJ Assassin looks up to, saw the potential in the young artiste and took him under his wings. It was not long after, that he was brought to the attention of Penthouse Records who is currently his management. With Penthouse by his side, Assassin was ready to make an impression on the dancehall world. He recorded his first song, "Name Brand" for Baby Giant, but it was not until "How We Roll" on the 1999 Thunder Riddim, that people began to take notice of this fresh talent. His next single, "To Make Money," was then the driving force in his way to success. He began appearing at local events and was prepared to go beyond the local stage and into overseas venues.
In 2001, Assassin embarked on a series of overseas shows where he was able to gain new fans. Throughout it all however, he has remained true to himself and to the community in which he grew up. He not only wants to leave his mark on the music scene, he also wants to have something to fall back on in case the business fails him. Although he knows in his mind, he wouldn't be doing anything but music at the moment; he still wants to have something to replace musical skills. If he was not on the mic deejaying, he states he would be doing something involving journalism. "I can't really see myself doing anything but this, but maybe journalism, so I can stay close to the music." The young DJ is also very confident in himself when he says, "The thing to do is try to find some kind of motivation and believe in yourself and your talent. There will always be elements that will challenge that, but as long as you know you are doing the right thing, you'll make it."

Anthony B - BIO

Draped in the rich colours of African cloth, his trademark staff in hand, and his dreadlocks wrapped regally on his head, Anthony B embodies all that it is spiritual and proactive about Reggae music. This artiste has been steadfast in his mission to represent the poor and oppressed, using sharp lyrics to confront political injustices and bring the issues of the people to the forefront. In the process, he has raised the quality of performance standards and lyrical content for the industry, through the release of 13 albums, over 1000 singles and appearances on over 100 albums in the last 14 years.
Anthony B's musical journey started in the church, back when he was still called Keith Anthony Blair in Clark's Town, Trelawney. In this part of rural Jamaica, Anthony B was immersed in the thunderous chants and rhythms of Revivalism and the Seventh Day Adventist church where he honed his soon-to-be signature vocals. In his formative years, the artiste also cleaved to the music of Otis Redding and the incomparable Peter Tosh.
In 1992, Anthony B left his home-town and set out to make his fateful mark on Kingston's music scene. He rebuked the trend of girl and gun lyrics popular at that time and remained faithful to words of spiritual consciousness and social conviction. He started working with singer Little Devon, who introduced him to Richard "Bell" Bello, of Star Trail Records, producer for Garnet Silk and Everton Blender. Bell saw the talent of the youngster and shared his commitment to conscious music. The partnership produced a slew of records and releases, such as "Repentance time", "Fire pon Rome", "One Thing", "A De Man", "Rumour" and "Raid di Barn". Anthony B followed up with critically acclaimed albums such as " Real Revolutionary", "Universal Struggle", "7 Seals", "Black Star" and "Untouchable". He also struck out on his own to start his own label, Born Fire Records in 2002. He produced 3 albums independently; Street Knowledge, That's Life and Life Over Death. In addition he released two collaboration albums "Too Strong" with Sizzla and "Three Wise Men" with Sizzla and Luciano.
Anthony B's lyrical genius and his captivating, energetic performance style have caused him to be heavily requested for performances in the Caribbean, North America, Europe and Africa. Anthony B personally rates his performance in 1999 at the Montrose Jazz Festival as a monumental event in his career. In 2003 and 2004, he was given a King's welcome in Gambia and Senegal. In 2004, he sold out shows in Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, Belgium, France, Italy and Germany; closing for such greats as Israel Vibration and Burning Spear. He also opened up new regions for reggae music through his performances in New Dehli, India, Czech Republic, Iceland, Argentina, Venezuela and on France's Reunion Island, in the Indian Ocean.
His heavy touring schedule has not slowed Anthony B's stream of releases. Over the years, he has collaborated with Bone Crusher, Akon, Wyclef Jean, Snoop Dogg, R. Kelly, Martina, an on his latest album, Toots.
Anthony B's rich vocals and audacious lyrics carry a depth and substance which is rare in the industry. Internationally, his fan-base has grown because he speaks about the universal concerns of suffering and salvation. "The greatest thing about reggae music is that it's about concepts and ideas," says the artiste, "you are speaking to people on issues they live and can relate to."
Anthony B's latest hit singles include "Sleeping In the Rain", "Satisfaction", "Bad From Long Time", and "Teaser" and come from his highly-anticipated 13th album, "Life Over Death". In January 2009, Anthony is set to release yet another album with Greensleeves Records. The album, "Rise" produced by Frenchy Maximum Sound, continues Anthony's legacy as he proves himself to be one of Reggae's most prolific and engaging artistes, an electrifying performer whose music grips the public social conscience.

MACKA DIAMOND

The influence of music was around Charmaine from an early age. Her father, Phillip Munroe, is a record producer who not only worked with some of the greats, including the likes of, Gregory Isaacs, while also being close friends with legendary Dancehall Producer, King Jammy’s, and Reggae Music’s Production dynamite duo, Sly & Robbie. It was after hearing artists such as Sister Nancy (aka Mama Nancy), a female deejay trailblazer, that she decided she too was going to become a deejay, deciding that soon, she would: “soon join unoo…”. Unfortunately her mother did not share her dream but after she had emigrated to the USA the way was left open for Charmaine and, much to her teacher’s disappointment, she decided against furthering her studies after finishing High School in 1987. Instead she headed for the prize, stardom.
The determination that drives Macka Diamond today has been with her from the very beginning, because instead of using her father’s connections to get her foot in the door, Macka decided to do it alone. She asked a friend to show her where Lady Junie, another happening foundation female deejay at the time, lived, and just like that, she went and introduced herself. Lady Junie was not slow to realize Charmaine’s potential and she began to take her protégé around and introduce her to some of the movers and shakers in the music business.
“I got my influence by listening to the female artistes who were big at the time… Mama Nancy, Lady Ann, Lady Junie and Lady G.” Charmaine had decided to call herself Lady Charm but after she had made her first record, an answer version to Major Mackerel’s ‘Don Ban’, the producer insisted that the song be released under the name, Lady Mackerel. Needless to say, but Charmaine did not like such a development one bit, it said that she cried when she heard about it, but the producer was insistent and she went along with it for she knew that her time would come and that she would eventually make it under her own terms.
‘Don Girl’ proved to be a hit and she went on to record for Sound System champions Stone Love, King Tubby’s Kingston 11 label and in various combinations including live work and recording with Captain Barkey and Wicker Man. Macka is known as a workaholic, and that she is, staying with it, working, developing her own individual style and stage persona, eventually became a stalwart and dependable feature on Kingston’s bubbling dancehall scene, all the time building and preparing for her big break
“Never give up on your dreams. Just continue to work if you believe in yourself.” Charmaine was not going to give up her dream and any setbacks that she encountered along the way only served to encourage her to try even harder. “When I could not get a tune to play on the radio that was hurtful… even when I recorded a tune which I knew was good it did not get played.”
Sometimes a change is good: Charmaine decided that she had finally outgrown her Lady Mackerel epithet in 2003, changing her name to Macka Diamond; along with the new name came a different, more aggressive lyrical approach. That year Vybz Kartel’s massive hit ‘Tek Buddy’ had put forward the theory that women were after pots and pans in return for sex, an opinion that Macka Diamond was not feeling, coming hard with the counteraction/reply, ‘Tek Con’.
Macka’s ribald reply got the message across, and she informed Vybz Kartel (and misogynists everywhere) that women were after way more than plasma televisions! “The change can come if all female artists decide to get more serious… get as aggressive as the male.” Says Macka Diamond, whose hard work finally paid off in the summer of 2004 when ‘Done A Ready’ topped the Jamaican charts. The first time a female had topped the charts in four years. Her unapologetic dig at men who failed to meet the required standard touched a nerve deep down with the female audience who had grown tired of dancehall’s relentless boastful machismo. Someone was telling a different side to the story: a side that was not usually mentioned in ‘polite company’. It touched a nerve with some of the island’s deejays too but Macka was more than able to deal with this: “…I will know next time who can take joke, and who can’t.”
Macka Diamond has had to make some difficult artistic decisions in order to make it to the point where she finds herself today. She has gone through name and style changes, worked alone or with partners such as Queen Paula and in collectives such as Captain Barkey’s Worm Dem Crew, but at all times, underneath these changes there lay an unchanging well of deep, untapped talent waiting to be drawn on. “I’ve tried a lot of formulas. I’ve changed my image, name and style many times. Now I have it…”
Macka Diamond could never be described as an overnight sensation, and her twenty two years of working non-stop in the male dominated, over-hyped environment of Kingston’s dancehall scene, could be counted as enough experience to fill any number of lifetimes. Her measured delivery and unbridled humor cut across any hint of the shrillness of “a lady who protests too much” and by giving her legions of fans exactly what they want, there is little argument that her popularity will continue to grow
“I’m a real entertainer, always putting out my best for my audience, because performing to me is a very intimate and personal experience.” Constantly in demand for shows and recordings, Macka Diamond is now finally calling the shots, with the start of her own Entertainment Company, DiamondDistrict Ja. which just made the stakes even greater, because not only is Macka at the top of her game, she is already making the type of moves that got her where she is today, at the top of her game.
Not many items can outshine a diamond when hit by the light from the right angle and at the right time, and since reinventing herself some years ago, going from Lady Cham to Lady Mackerel, eventually arriving at Macka Diamond, the skies have been the limit for female DJ extraordinaire, Charmaine Munroe, aka Macka Diamond.
Known throughout the Reggae/Dancehall circles as the Money Goddess, Macka Diamond, know for her uncompromising and bold love for the all-might dollar, as over the years earned the title of being come to be known as the woman’s defender. Even coining to their rescue with the catch phrase, Money-O!!! making it clear to the men that if it isn’t about money, there is almost no need for a conversation.
“ I’m saying what the women want to hear but are afraid to say…” says Macka, who explains herself further when asked about the contents of her lyrics to the tune of, “Listen, we live in a crazy and depressing world, so why stress ourselves more….. let’s have some fun before we get old, which is really what my songs are about, even though money does make things just a little better,” says Macka with a sly smile.
Jamaican music has long been infamous for its macho braggadocio and its unashamedly sexist stance, so when a woman enters this male dominated arena and ends up beating the men at their own game, you have little choice but to pay attention.… exactly what Macka Diamond has done in a short space of time, scoring several monster hits over the last few years, and even walking away with one of Reggae/Dancehall Music’s most coveted awards, Female DJ of the Year, on not one, but three occasions, back-to-back.
GYPTIAN

Born Windel Beneto Edwards on October 25th, in the King Weston District of St. Andrew to a Seventh Day Adventist mother and Rastafarian father, Gyptian received his musical calling at the age of 7, when he began singing in the church. Recognizing his God-given talent, his parents soon introduced the resistant youngster to Mr. Wong, a producer from Portmore in St. Catherine. I did not take it seriously. My family members have always been carrying me to Portmore to see him, but I usually disappear. One day, they dropped me off at his studio and left me and it all began there.
Under the guidance of Mr. Wong and Earl Chinna Smith, Gyptian honed his unique sound, winning the 2004 Star Search talent competition at Kens Wild Flower Lounge in Portmore, earning him a spot at Sting 2004, dubbed the greatest one night reggae show on earth.
Nicknamed from his habit of tying a shirt around his head and twisting his chin hair like an Egyptian pharaoh, the young, gifted, and conscious singer is very protective of keeping his sound 100% Gyptian. You have to think about what people think and how they feel, the real things that people see. Any track at all you hear from Gyptian, right by my fingers out of my head."
