Assassin - Bio

When a newcomer to the world of dancehall took the stage alongside T.O.K in the Cayman Islands in summer 2001, he expected it to be a good outing. He would perform his usual songs for a new crowd, and hopefully garner a few new fans. He took the stage, performed those familiar songs, but instead of a few fans, he acquired an island of new fans. His performance was so commanding and capturing that he was selected mayor of the island for a day. That particular performance made the young DJ realize even more that the place of dancehall music was where he wanted to be. He declares that show to be his best so far, stating, "I even outshined T.O.K" with a slight laugh. That night on that island, many got a glimpse of the young DJ, Assassin, poised to take his place as a forerunner in dancehall music.

Assassin got his lethal stage name from musical clashes he encountered with friends while in school. He would literally "assassinate" the competition; as a result, the moniker was adopted. Born and raised in Papine, 20 year-old Jeffrey Campbell started deejaying at around age 4. When asked who saw the potential in him, his first response is his brother, Garrett, also known as G-Code. His family was a big factor in the former Camperdown student's decision to pursue music. "My family really, my family and friends said I could do it, so I just did." Assassin did just that, he ventured into the world of reggae music with the assistance of one of his musical influences, Spragga Benz.

Spragga Benz, being a DJ Assassin looks up to, saw the potential in the young artiste and took him under his wings. It was not long after, that he was brought to the attention of Penthouse Records who is currently his management. With Penthouse by his side, Assassin was ready to make an impression on the dancehall world. He recorded his first song, "Name Brand" for Baby Giant, but it was not until "How We Roll" on the 1999 Thunder Riddim, that people began to take notice of this fresh talent. His next single, "To Make Money," was then the driving force in his way to success. He began appearing at local events and was prepared to go beyond the local stage and into overseas venues.

In 2001, Assassin embarked on a series of overseas shows where he was able to gain new fans. Throughout it all however, he has remained true to himself and to the community in which he grew up. He not only wants to leave his mark on the music scene, he also wants to have something to fall back on in case the business fails him. Although he knows in his mind, he wouldn't be doing anything but music at the moment; he still wants to have something to replace musical skills. If he was not on the mic deejaying, he states he would be doing something involving journalism. "I can't really see myself doing anything but this, but maybe journalism, so I can stay close to the music." The young DJ is also very confident in himself when he says, "The thing to do is try to find some kind of motivation and believe in yourself and your talent. There will always be elements that will challenge that, but as long as you know you are doing the right thing, you'll make it."

Anthony B - BIO

Draped in the rich colours of African cloth, his trademark staff in hand, and his dreadlocks wrapped regally on his head, Anthony B embodies all that it is spiritual and proactive about Reggae music. This artiste has been steadfast in his mission to represent the poor and oppressed, using sharp lyrics to confront political injustices and bring the issues of the people to the forefront. In the process, he has raised the quality of performance standards and lyrical content for the industry, through the release of 13 albums, over 1000 singles and appearances on over 100 albums in the last 14 years.

Anthony B's musical journey started in the church, back when he was still called Keith Anthony Blair in Clark's Town, Trelawney. In this part of rural Jamaica, Anthony B was immersed in the thunderous chants and rhythms of Revivalism and the Seventh Day Adventist church where he honed his soon-to-be signature vocals. In his formative years, the artiste also cleaved to the music of Otis Redding and the incomparable Peter Tosh.

In 1992, Anthony B left his home-town and set out to make his fateful mark on Kingston's music scene. He rebuked the trend of girl and gun lyrics popular at that time and remained faithful to words of spiritual consciousness and social conviction. He started working with singer Little Devon, who introduced him to Richard "Bell" Bello, of Star Trail Records, producer for Garnet Silk and Everton Blender. Bell saw the talent of the youngster and shared his commitment to conscious music. The partnership produced a slew of records and releases, such as "Repentance time", "Fire pon Rome", "One Thing", "A De Man", "Rumour" and "Raid di Barn". Anthony B followed up with critically acclaimed albums such as " Real Revolutionary", "Universal Struggle", "7 Seals", "Black Star" and "Untouchable". He also struck out on his own to start his own label, Born Fire Records in 2002. He produced 3 albums independently; Street Knowledge, That's Life and Life Over Death. In addition he released two collaboration albums "Too Strong" with Sizzla and "Three Wise Men" with Sizzla and Luciano.
Anthony B's lyrical genius and his captivating, energetic performance style have caused him to be heavily requested for performances in the Caribbean, North America, Europe and Africa. Anthony B personally rates his performance in 1999 at the Montrose Jazz Festival as a monumental event in his career. In 2003 and 2004, he was given a King's welcome in Gambia and Senegal. In 2004, he sold out shows in Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, Belgium, France, Italy and Germany; closing for such greats as Israel Vibration and Burning Spear. He also opened up new regions for reggae music through his performances in New Dehli, India, Czech Republic, Iceland, Argentina, Venezuela and on France's Reunion Island, in the Indian Ocean.
His heavy touring schedule has not slowed Anthony B's stream of releases. Over the years, he has collaborated with Bone Crusher, Akon, Wyclef Jean, Snoop Dogg, R. Kelly, Martina, an on his latest album, Toots.

Anthony B's rich vocals and audacious lyrics carry a depth and substance which is rare in the industry. Internationally, his fan-base has grown because he speaks about the universal concerns of suffering and salvation. "The greatest thing about reggae music is that it's about concepts and ideas," says the artiste, "you are speaking to people on issues they live and can relate to."

Anthony B's latest hit singles include "Sleeping In the Rain", "Satisfaction", "Bad From Long Time", and "Teaser" and come from his highly-anticipated 13th album, "Life Over Death". In January 2009, Anthony is set to release yet another album with Greensleeves Records. The album, "Rise" produced by Frenchy Maximum Sound, continues Anthony's legacy as he proves himself to be one of Reggae's most prolific and engaging artistes, an electrifying performer whose music grips the public social conscience.

Serani

Serani is a member of the young but very talented group DASECA Productions. As unique and potent as it sounds, DASECA Productions, the future pioneer of Jamaican producers have arrived. Three friends David Anthony Harrisingh, Crag Serani Marsh, Craig Andrew Harrisingh came together and started a production group called DASECA Productions in 2001. DA (David Anthony) –SE (Serani)-CA (Craig Andrew) was originated through the initials of first and middle names of each member. With a similar quest in mind, DASECA wanted to produce everyone from the best to the upcoming artistes. But with every business, the return of investment really begins in the third or fourth year in operation. While on the trail of being producers, Serani was approached by Craig "Leftside" Parkes to be lead keyboardist in Wayne Marshall's Martial arts band. He took up the offer and broaden channels in the music fraternity for DASECA Productions. DASECA branched out and started playing on other producers’ tracks, learning the trade at the same time. Serani played on phrases on different beats such as, ‘Mad Guitar’ ‘Close Your Eyes’ ‘Good To Go (over dub)’ ‘Mad Ants (over dub)’produced by Don Corleone; ‘Rebirth (over dub)’ and ‘Steps’ produced by Renaissance; DASECA solely created ‘Chaka Chaka’ and ‘Clear’ which was produced by Fire Links, and so on. DASECA produced and released their first beat ‘Safe Sex’ with the European market enjoying the sounds of the various artistes. Their second production was the successful Anger Management riddim which was released in November, 2004 and is still playing today. Mavado has the hit single “Real Mckoy,” which has been given constant rotation in Jamaica and foreign radios. Bounty Killa, Mavado, Busy Signal have been working closely with DASECA, building a close knit family. DASECA has managed to break out Mavado and Alaine in the Danehall, Reggae industry by giving them a number of hits. Alaine and Mavado have now been able to work with other producers and well known artistes as a result of the buzz created by Daseca. DASECA made the beat for “Willie Bounce,” a popular hit by Elephant Man, which a number one hit song Jamaica for many weeks. With the success of Anger Management and the advice from Bounty Killa, DASECA was urged to produce Angrier Management which has kept Anger Management in constant rotation on the radio, parties, and sound clashes in Jamaica and abroad. Serani has co-produced the first two singles on Sean Paul’s new platinum album “Trinity,” including ‘We Be Burning,’ which was the first released single. The ‘We be Burning’ track helped Trinity smash a Jamaican record of 107,000 copies sold in the first week. Serani continued and made the ‘Smash’ riddim which hosts the song ‘Dutty Wine’ by Tony Matterhorn. Dutty Wine is the number one song presently in Jamaica and England. Serani has been blessed with the ability to discover talent which has brought to fore front an artist called Bugle. He has managed to hit the main stream with a massive song called "what we gonna do"(exercise). Bugle will definitely be a force to rockon with in the future. DASECA is also looking on a few more artists to break to the mainstream. Serani is also recording his own songs and promoting two new singles entitled "doh" featuring Bugle and "she loves me", a groovy sensual song for the ladies.

TARRUS RILEY

_________________________TARRUS RILEY______________________Not even ten chariots with horses can stop this new Reggae voice on the scene… no, its not a novelty act, but one that is destined for legendary status. A ‘natural’ man of superb talent has risen like a Phoenix…some would say, its Jah will. Coming from the combination of a Nurse and a Singer, “healing music” is how he appropriately describes his music. Tarrus Riley has thrown his hat in the race, with a no-doubt approach that says, “I’m here to stay”.The singer who gave us “Larger than Life” and “Barber Chair” on his first album Challenges on the Yaman Label, is back at it, and even better than before. His sophomore album Parables, is currently being distributed by VP records. Parables…’a simple story illustrating a moral or religious lesson’. The album is suitably titled, as each song is a lesson from the book of life. Boasting 14 original tracks out of 15, produced by the multi-faceted Dean Fraser, Parables is a respectable achievement for this young artiste. His mother, Lavern, has been a strong supporter of his music from day one. He was originally produced by his father, Singer Jimmy Riley, on his label ‘Love & Promotion’. Tarrus also gained experience from Heavy Beat and Main Street, while teaching himself how to play the keyboard and percussion instruments…Kette, Congo and Bongo. He views his cooking similar to his music. He says every man seasons his pot different, and for him, each instrument that makes up a song, is the same as each seasoning that makes up the pot. No wonder Tarrus’ music is always a potpourri of musical progressions, melodies and not to mention the soulful voice that he has become known for.The Title track, Parables written by Tarrus on Max Romeo’s Three Blind Mice rhythm, cautions us to ‘read between the lines’. Tarrus said its the first he has ever done a cover version of someone else’s song, John Legend’s, “Stay With You”. This song will prove to be one of the perpetual classics from Tarrus Riley. “She’s Royal” is the kind of song that creeps up on you, with an excellent arrangement. The anthemic “Lion Paw” offers a stamp of approval, with rhythm. And then Della Manley helps to bring us home to “Family”, a real groove-finder capped off by a melodious chorus. Sold! Tarrus Riley, young, gifted and Bold!

BUGLE

My Love Affair with Music: Introducing Bugle Name to a Face: Roy Thompson a.k.a. Bugle was born in Portland, Jamaica. Sketching the Future: Bugle’s fledgling love affair with music began as early as in primary school. However, this affair never matured until the birth of the new millennium when he met Oniel Bryan a.k.a. Elephant Man, (a prominent international dancehall artist) in 2000. He was then ushered into the dancehall fraternity when he was asked to write for Elephant Man. Stepping into the Future: The lyrical offsprings of Bugle’s love affair are documented as follows: Mentally Ill: Collaboration with Elephant Man (2001) “Good to Go” Tour: Touring with Elephant Man (2002) BET’s 106 and Park: Appearance (2002) MTV Awards (Japan): Invitee BET Music Awards: Invitee (where he made alliances with Janet Jackson and Pharrell) Tour in Canada: Appearance Collaborations with Tornado: songs included “Modella” and “If I say I love you” Dream Walk: The umbilical chords are cut and the emergence of a nubile lyrical soulchild is belched out into being. In 2005, Bugle met Shawn Scott, CEO of Shawn Scott Music Group (SSMG) under whose auspices he stayed for one year. However, the clipped wings of music must be emancipated for Bugle to truly echo his story in song…At the midstream of time Bugle severed the ties with SSMG and in mid 2007 Bugle embraced the musical oasis that DASECA Productions represents. DASECA is a music production triad committed to fostering freedom of musical expression whilst ensuring that the human face of music is nourished. Black Wings, White Light: As the spotlight parts the darkness the black wings of Bugle’s musical soul pierces the silence as he emerges singing “What We Gonna Do?” (Exercise) the anthem of his emancipation. Keep your ears tuned to your radio for “Journeys” the sequel. Bugle is also featured on Serani’s latest single “Doh” which is getting much airplay locally and internationally. Positive. Conscious. Real. Lyrical. Soulful….the Journey continues… Hard work overcomes all difficulties…. Blessed Love Bugle

SPICE

Spice Biography- Charismatic, sexy and lyrically lethal are words that could be used to describe the fast rising lady DJ Spice, who from her first major appearance at Sting 2000 made it clear that she was in the business to stay. Unfazed by the huge crowd that faced her Spice delivered an awesome performance earning four encores in the process. There was no doubt about it, she made dancehall world stood up and took notice. Hailing from the Old Braeton community in St. Catherine Grace Hamilton aka Spice was an avid lover of music. While attending St. Catherine High School she, year after year entered the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s (JCDC) festival contest in music, singing her way through the judges hearts and winning a gold medal each time for her school. Although she was good at it, Spice never really thought she would end up working full time in the music industry. She was too busy focusing on her school work – so much so that she graduated fifth form with all of eight subjects. With a career in chartered accounting in mind and plans to go on to sixth form somewhere along those lines Spice decided she would much rather focus on a music career. With that decision made she enrolled at the Edna Manley School for the Visual and Performing Arts to do voice and drama. Spice got the break she was looking for in 1999 when she appeared on a show Nuffy had at the time on JACS cable called Many Moods of Nuffy. After her exposure she started getting a lot of positive feedbacks from friends and those who had seen her – all encouraging her to take it up as a career. Soon Spice went from straight singing into dabbling into dejaying and found out she really had the crowd going when she did…it didn’t take her long to focus on where her strength was – as a DJ. In 2000 Heavy D from Supreme Promotions saw her dejaying and wasted no time in giving her the chance to perform at Sting 2000…needless to say his confidence was well merited. Early 2002 Spice went on a tour in England with Ward 21 and Baby Cham. With no hit to her credit, Spice totally devastated the audience and in the process earned the respect of Baby Cham. He wanted to know why she didn’t have songs flooding the airwaves. She confessed to not having the links to establish herself. He assured her he would introduce her to Dave Kelly when he went back home…a promised he kept and saw her releasing her first single for Mad House, ‘Mi Gone’ on the Pretty Pretty rhythm did well both locally and overseas. That same year she returned to Sting stage with a performance that left Elephant Man in her shadows! Spice went on to later record ‘Hype’ and ‘Right There’ (with TOI) on Dave Kelly’s Bad Gal rhythm and the videos for them created even more inroads for her. When she released ‘Fight Over Man’ it created a rave in the dancehall. A lot of female artistes find that pregnancy slowed them down, but not Spice she took it in strides making her probably the only artiste who worked through her pregnancy, giving birth to her son and six weeks later was back on stage! Being a mother has now changed her career perspective and that includes being more professional about the business. Spice is now working with team of professionals which includes publicity firm Khool International headed by Ray Alexander, booking agent, stylist, road manager, street team and of course she already has Mad House dealing with most of her productions although she voices for other top ranked producers. Another improvement with the talent lady DJ is the fact that she will be doing more radio friendly songs in a bid to be more “corporate friendly”. Spice has just wrapped up recording three singles ‘I’m Back’ on the North Coast rhythm for House of Vibes, ‘Done Out’ on Dem rhythm for Ward 21 and ‘Inna Di Light’ on the Gear Box rhythm for Truck Back. There is no doubt – Spice is back and she intends to keep a commanding presence on the scene.

MACKA DIAMOND

Charmaine Munroe was born in Kingston and grew up in Portmore. She attended Holy Childhood High School, an all-girl Catholic School in Kingston, but even then her focus was more on becoming a deejay than on her studies, proven time and time again with her skipping her art classes in order to practice her skills and to entertain her friends at the back, or some secluded area of the school.
The influence of music was around Charmaine from an early age. Her father, Phillip Munroe, is a record producer who not only worked with some of the greats, including the likes of, Gregory Isaacs, while also being close friends with legendary Dancehall Producer, King Jammy’s, and Reggae Music’s Production dynamite duo, Sly & Robbie. It was after hearing artists such as Sister Nancy (aka Mama Nancy), a female deejay trailblazer, that she decided she too was going to become a deejay, deciding that soon, she would: “soon join unoo…”. Unfortunately her mother did not share her dream but after she had emigrated to the USA the way was left open for Charmaine and, much to her teacher’s disappointment, she decided against furthering her studies after finishing High School in 1987. Instead she headed for the prize, stardom.
The determination that drives Macka Diamond today has been with her from the very beginning, because instead of using her father’s connections to get her foot in the door, Macka decided to do it alone. She asked a friend to show her where Lady Junie, another happening foundation female deejay at the time, lived, and just like that, she went and introduced herself. Lady Junie was not slow to realize Charmaine’s potential and she began to take her protégé around and introduce her to some of the movers and shakers in the music business.
“I got my influence by listening to the female artistes who were big at the time… Mama Nancy, Lady Ann, Lady Junie and Lady G.” Charmaine had decided to call herself Lady Charm but after she had made her first record, an answer version to Major Mackerel’s ‘Don Ban’, the producer insisted that the song be released under the name, Lady Mackerel. Needless to say, but Charmaine did not like such a development one bit, it said that she cried when she heard about it, but the producer was insistent and she went along with it for she knew that her time would come and that she would eventually make it under her own terms.
‘Don Girl’ proved to be a hit and she went on to record for Sound System champions Stone Love, King Tubby’s Kingston 11 label and in various combinations including live work and recording with Captain Barkey and Wicker Man. Macka is known as a workaholic, and that she is, staying with it, working, developing her own individual style and stage persona, eventually became a stalwart and dependable feature on Kingston’s bubbling dancehall scene, all the time building and preparing for her big break
“Never give up on your dreams. Just continue to work if you believe in yourself.” Charmaine was not going to give up her dream and any setbacks that she encountered along the way only served to encourage her to try even harder. “When I could not get a tune to play on the radio that was hurtful… even when I recorded a tune which I knew was good it did not get played.”
Sometimes a change is good: Charmaine decided that she had finally outgrown her Lady Mackerel epithet in 2003, changing her name to Macka Diamond; along with the new name came a different, more aggressive lyrical approach. That year Vybz Kartel’s massive hit ‘Tek Buddy’ had put forward the theory that women were after pots and pans in return for sex, an opinion that Macka Diamond was not feeling, coming hard with the counteraction/reply, ‘Tek Con’.
Macka’s ribald reply got the message across, and she informed Vybz Kartel (and misogynists everywhere) that women were after way more than plasma televisions! “The change can come if all female artists decide to get more serious… get as aggressive as the male.” Says Macka Diamond, whose hard work finally paid off in the summer of 2004 when ‘Done A Ready’ topped the Jamaican charts. The first time a female had topped the charts in four years. Her unapologetic dig at men who failed to meet the required standard touched a nerve deep down with the female audience who had grown tired of dancehall’s relentless boastful machismo. Someone was telling a different side to the story: a side that was not usually mentioned in ‘polite company’. It touched a nerve with some of the island’s deejays too but Macka was more than able to deal with this: “…I will know next time who can take joke, and who can’t.”
Macka Diamond has had to make some difficult artistic decisions in order to make it to the point where she finds herself today. She has gone through name and style changes, worked alone or with partners such as Queen Paula and in collectives such as Captain Barkey’s Worm Dem Crew, but at all times, underneath these changes there lay an unchanging well of deep, untapped talent waiting to be drawn on. “I’ve tried a lot of formulas. I’ve changed my image, name and style many times. Now I have it…”
Macka Diamond could never be described as an overnight sensation, and her twenty two years of working non-stop in the male dominated, over-hyped environment of Kingston’s dancehall scene, could be counted as enough experience to fill any number of lifetimes. Her measured delivery and unbridled humor cut across any hint of the shrillness of “a lady who protests too much” and by giving her legions of fans exactly what they want, there is little argument that her popularity will continue to grow
“I’m a real entertainer, always putting out my best for my audience, because performing to me is a very intimate and personal experience.” Constantly in demand for shows and recordings, Macka Diamond is now finally calling the shots, with the start of her own Entertainment Company, DiamondDistrict Ja. which just made the stakes even greater, because not only is Macka at the top of her game, she is already making the type of moves that got her where she is today, at the top of her game.
Not many items can outshine a diamond when hit by the light from the right angle and at the right time, and since reinventing herself some years ago, going from Lady Cham to Lady Mackerel, eventually arriving at Macka Diamond, the skies have been the limit for female DJ extraordinaire, Charmaine Munroe, aka Macka Diamond.
Known throughout the Reggae/Dancehall circles as the Money Goddess, Macka Diamond, know for her uncompromising and bold love for the all-might dollar, as over the years earned the title of being come to be known as the woman’s defender. Even coining to their rescue with the catch phrase, Money-O!!! making it clear to the men that if it isn’t about money, there is almost no need for a conversation.
“ I’m saying what the women want to hear but are afraid to say…” says Macka, who explains herself further when asked about the contents of her lyrics to the tune of, “Listen, we live in a crazy and depressing world, so why stress ourselves more….. let’s have some fun before we get old, which is really what my songs are about, even though money does make things just a little better,” says Macka with a sly smile.
Jamaican music has long been infamous for its macho braggadocio and its unashamedly sexist stance, so when a woman enters this male dominated arena and ends up beating the men at their own game, you have little choice but to pay attention.… exactly what Macka Diamond has done in a short space of time, scoring several monster hits over the last few years, and even walking away with one of Reggae/Dancehall Music’s most coveted awards, Female DJ of the Year, on not one, but three occasions, back-to-back.

GYPTIAN

In 2005, the previously unknown singer rose to international acclaim when his debut single Serious Times hit the top of the local and overseas reggae charts, and defeated even Junior Gongs Top Ten Billboard hit Welcome to Jamrock, to be declared Jamaicas Most Important Song of 2005. Nominated for Best New Entertainer at the 2006 International Reggae and World Music Awards, the twenty-three year old velvet-voiced singer has been dominating the charts with a slew of hit singles including Is There a Place, Beautiful Lady, and the chart-topping ballad Mama, Dont Cry.
Born Windel Beneto Edwards on October 25th, in the King Weston District of St. Andrew to a Seventh Day Adventist mother and Rastafarian father, Gyptian received his musical calling at the age of 7, when he began singing in the church. Recognizing his God-given talent, his parents soon introduced the resistant youngster to Mr. Wong, a producer from Portmore in St. Catherine. I did not take it seriously. My family members have always been carrying me to Portmore to see him, but I usually disappear. One day, they dropped me off at his studio and left me and it all began there.
Under the guidance of Mr. Wong and Earl Chinna Smith, Gyptian honed his unique sound, winning the 2004 Star Search talent competition at Kens Wild Flower Lounge in Portmore, earning him a spot at Sting 2004, dubbed the greatest one night reggae show on earth.
Nicknamed from his habit of tying a shirt around his head and twisting his chin hair like an Egyptian pharaoh, the young, gifted, and conscious singer is very protective of keeping his sound 100% Gyptian. You have to think about what people think and how they feel, the real things that people see. Any track at all you hear from Gyptian, right by my fingers out of my head."

ETANA - BIO

Arguably the most prolific female vocalist in present day Reggae singer/ songwriter Etana has struck a cord with the masses and like any beautiful melody she's winning the hearts of the people one song at a time.Spirited in her approach to communicate unfitting and inspirational messages to the youth she's been described by critics as the truth, one who will bring about real change with her powerful and captivating voice that at times seem flawlessly pure.Rebellious in her approach to denote systematic oppression against all races Etana takes pride in being an artist, she feels strongly that her responsibility as a recording artist is to express positive vibrations in her music and from this she will graceful admit to staying the course.Born Shauna McKenzie Etana spent her youthful days playing in the hill side community of August Town situated in the South Eastern side of Jamaica. The only daughter of a fairly large family of boys she was as curious then as she is determined now doing the mischievous things most children tend to do at an early age. Attending school locally up until 1992 when she migrated to the U.S to start a new life in the sunshine state of Miami Florida Etana was a budding achiever; she finished grade school and eventually went off to college the year after with plans of becoming a Registered Nurse.During her studies at Broward Community College Etana became extremely passionate about music, she was consumed with the joy of creating her own mix of the different genres she would attentively listen to in her earlier years. A hardened fan of Reggae, Pop, Hip Hop and Jazz Musicians she found inspiration in Whitney Houston, Lauren Hill, Jill Scott, Sizzla Kalongi, Marcia Griffiths and the legend Bob Marley all of who eventually gave the then academic the will to explore a new and potentially more suited career in Music. In 2000 after making a tuff decision to prematurely exit college Etana attempted a shot at stardom when she joined a girl group by the name "GIFT" which was being courted by Universal Records. Sexy, Reviling and conforming to the industry stereo type of how a woman should dress Etana fell victim to her dreams of becoming a mainstream star. It wasn't her ideal fit but she conformed to the record labels requests and gave in to her groups glamorous appeal until one day while on a video shoot for their lead single she could bear it no more walking away from the spotlights and returning to her place of birth Kingston, Jamaica to start fresh as an entrepreneur looking to grab a piece of the Cyber Market with an Internet Cafe. Down but not out Etana still wanted to do music but only in her own way, she wanted to send a different message and portray a more eloquent look and this opportunity came in 2005 when a friend brought her to Fifth Element who at the time was prospering from the strength of Richie Spice who was heavily booked for several American and European Tours.Auditioning for a shot at becoming the backup vocalist for Spice Etana vocally floored his management team and was handed a plane ticket to do a few shows in the U.S. The ensuing fifteen months followed with the now permanent songstress soaking up valued experience as a stage performer with performance credits in Europe and North America.Eager to make her own mark Etana boldly attempted a hit single one day while chilling with the guitar player and Percussionist from Richie Spice's band. The idea had been floating in her thoughts for weeks and like magic the melody for her debut smash single "Wrong Address" was born. Simple yet effective the single was a fusion of Jazz and Reggae, it was the first of its kind and in 2006 the song was rewarded with heavy radio rotations plunging it in the number 1 position of several local charts.Describing her style back then Etana was quoted as saying "I do music straight from the heart, straight from the soul, straight from the people i see in everyday life" and so came about her second major hit Roots which was an intriguing mix of African and reggae cultural sounds fused with Jamaican Creole. The song became an anthem because of the definitive statement "You can't water down and dilute" featured in the chorus.Video's for both songs helped bring Etana to the forefront of Reggae and during the summer and winter of 2007 she made her mark as a solo artist performing on international events like Reggae Sumfest, Fully Loaded, ATI Live Concert, Irie Jamboree, Welcome to Jamrock and Guinness Sting.Picking up where she left off in 2007 Etana began 2008 with the same level of focus rocking the likes of an Air Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival in late January so much so that patrons lashed the promoters for putting her on too early. A few well deserved awards in the bag Etana took home Best Female Vocalist at both the Excellence in Music & Entertainment (EME) Awards and the IRIE FM Radio Awards not to mention an award for Best Solo Female Reggae Vocalist copped at the 1st annual Reggae Academy Awards for which she had nominations in 3 separate categories.Currently promoting her new singles "Warrior Love" and "I Am Not Afraid" off her recently released debut album THE STRONG ONE on VP Records Etana is boldly taking on the world of music with the help of her new management team at Solid Agency. Owner of Free Mind Music / The Best Records Etana is poised to do Reggae proud.
